University of Maryland School of Nursing,
Baltimore, MD

Mary Etta Mills co-authored the book, Nursing Leadership in the Organized Delivery System for the Acute Care Setting, which was recently published by the American Nurses Association. Mills has also been elected president of the Maryland Council of Directors of Baccalaureate Programs. Claudia Smith presented the paper, “Process of Community Capacity Building to Reduce Multiple Environmental Health Hazards in Urban Housing,” at the 130th conference of the American Public Health Association. Mary Tilbury presented the paper, “Using Cinematic Paradigms of Leadership to Measure Student Achievement,” at the Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities. Carolyn Waltz has been appointed to the Program Committee for the 2003 meeting of the International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing. Linda Thompson received a one-year, $100,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Human Resources, Community Services Administration, to provide services to children who have been victims of child abuse and their families under the Victim of Crime Assistance (VOCA) Program. Carol Jennings has been invited to serve on the National League for Nursing’s special committee on public policy. Jane Lipscomb and Barbara Sattler had their book, Environmental Health and Nursing Practice, published. Ann Mech has been elected to the board of directors of Vantage House, a continuing care retirement community in Howard County, MD.

Regina Steele has been promoted to director of perioperative services. Robert Elrod has been appointed director of behavioral health. Marie Tarleton, Bridget Vetere-Overfield, Carol Kovich, and Karen McCleaf have completed their master’s degrees as nurse practitioners. Ann Byrne has achieved certification as a professional in human resources.

Elizabeth Austin has been granted certification as a lactation consultant by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. Dinx Jansen has been granted school nurse certification by the National Board for Certification of School Nurses. Philip Hall has been granted certification in nursing administration by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Fatma Youssef has received a $61,590 grant for 2003 from the Komen Race for the CureĀ® to fund continuing outreach to minority women for breast cancer detection. Youssef also co-authored the article “Educating clinicians to assess quality of life in patients with chronic illness,” published in Home Health Care Management & Practice.

Pam Del Monte has received ANCC certification in ambulatory care nursing. Gifty Asare has received certification in oncology nursing from the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. Suzanne McNicholas has publshed the article, “Social Support and Positive Health Practices,” in the Western Journal of Nursing Research.

Stephanie Reid has been named director of nursing for the medical/oncology and GEM units.

Mary Narayan has published the resource manual, Home Health Care Patient Education Manual for Low Literacy and Spanish-Speaking Patients.

Michele Schwarzmann has been named director of women’s and children’s services. Lori Brockmeyer has been named director of med/surg nursing.

Dorothy L. Powell has been selected as Black Nurse of the Year by the Black Nurses Association of Greater Washington.
